The Van Cleef & Arpels house creates a school

It's in the prestigious setting of the Hôtel d'Evreux on Place Vendôme, that Van Cleef & Arpels recently opened a jewelry school for all those who wish to explore, learn and be introduced to a real skill à la française. A wonderful opportunity to discover and enter an environment so often perceived as mysterious and closed.

Marie Vallanet-Delhom : L'école Van Cleef & Arpels is a project that we have been working on for nearly 2 years now, since this project came about quite simply during a discussion between those within the house, and when you deplore the fact that the world of jewelry is an extremely secretive and unknown world, as it's a world of few words, and that speaks little of its artisans and savoir-faire. And the next step was to simply say 'but of course', it's unknown because we don't speak about it and I would say that we are the profession, and at Van Cleef & Arpels, we are part of this profession.
It's a jewelry initiation school for the public. I believe that there are 3 big doors in order to enter the world of jewelry. One of which is via history of art, there is another which is via stones, the incredible history of stones, and the third entrance is the artisans' techniques, since the characteristic of a piece of jewelry is to be the result of a collective work with a juxtaposition and an accumulation of different skills.
There is a large amount dedicated to experimentation. For example, in a class on jeweler's techniques called `appreciation of techniques and collective works', there are four hours of class where we spend one hour in the classroom and three hours in the Ecole Van Cleef & Arpels' workshop, with the master jewelers or with the designers, in order to see the creation techniques, the completion of a piece of jewelry, and subsequently try it on. So we manipulate the jeweler's objects, the jeweler's tools, we manipulate precious materials and we try to reproduce these techniques. It takes about fifteen seconds to understand the virtuosity of this profession.
